Family Night Ideas
I am convinced that family nights don't have to look like people sitting around a table with a board game. Growing up I LOVED board games, but my parents would rarely play, which left my brother and I playing Monopoly for days on end, and eventually it led to boredom and gridlock. If your family loves board games, then they're wonderful for family nights, but if not, there are several wonderful things to do together instead.
Establishing the tradition of having a "family night" is what matters more than what actually takes place. Make it exciting by honoring this time together, creating a sacred space for your own family to connect.
Eat
Food is definitely important, and it doesn't have to consist of junk to be fun. Cooking together can be exciting, especially if the children are able to be involved in the planning of the "family night" meal. Pizza is delicious and simple. Everyone can make their own individual pizza, and take part in making the pizzas together. Pizza is also an exciting food to make with younger children, even toddlers.
Move
Getting out and moving together is a beautiful way to connect, and stay away from technology. Our homes can easily become a multisensory delight, full of endless technology. And the teenagers today are beginning to suffer from ‘text neck’, adults too for that matter. Leave the phones at home, and go outside together, especially when the weather is nice. Avoiding outdoor spaces that are too crowded is even better, a remote walk or hike will create space for conversation and connection to evolve.
Create
Creating something together, especially during the cooler seasons, when the days grow shorter, is ideal. This part of family night can evolve as your children grow. Maybe you could embroider together, or paint a family mural, or even learn something entirely new together.
One thing that the three of us enjoy is taking out all of Ester's instruments and making music together. We sing "Baby Beluga" and her other favorite songs, and jam.
Watch
Bonding together over a movie is a time honored way for families to spend a pleasant night in and in the digital age, there are so many to choose from. If you’re a movie buff you may need the right cable package to suit the needs of your family and you can check out Optimum’s website for additional details. Of course, there’s also a wealth of streaming options such as Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu, too.
Find something your family loves, and love doing it together.
