Gather On The Porch

Isn’t fall the best season for gathering outdoors? In winter, it’s too cold, in spring there are allergies/rain/wind, and summertime can often be too warm, (or full of mosquitos). But fall, it’s near perfect. With the earlier sunsets the days cool off quicker, the bugs disappear, and the season that’s symbolic for gathering together is just that, a time to come together. (Even if that means just you on the front porch with a cup of coffee.)

Creating a cozy front porch doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated, in fact, you don’t even need chairs. Sometimes just sitting on the steps watching your little ones play in the leaves is plenty. If you’re wanting to decorate, involve the whole family, making memories as it happens.

Since moving to our home here in northern Colorado we have been wanting to paint our front door a joyful shade of yellow. Yellow and gray work beautifully together, and yellow is a cheerful color (although I’m not sure how our door will look come Christmas time).
We spontaneously chose a Sunday afternoon to get our porch ready for fall. It’s simple, not magazine perfect, but just cozy enough for our family.

Paint/Pumpkins/Mums
We chose “Amelia’s Wings”, a paint color by Valspar from Lowes (exterior all weather paint, in satin). We purchased an entire gallon because we figured we may paint other things in our home. We already know we want to paint the other side of our front door since it’s such a pretty yellow. A few of the pumpkins we also found at Lowes, along with the mums. We already had the pots and the soil.

Wreath
This wreath is so perfect, and simple. It’s from Silk Plants Direct and meant to look like olive branches. We chose this wreath because it’s durable enough to last throughout all four seasons. Come Christmas we can wrap it with lights, or ribbon (or perhaps I’ll pull out our pinecone wreath from last year). In the spring we get a lot of crazy wind, and this wreath won’t dry up or fall apart (since it’s plastic). (And olive branches symbolize peace.)

Nothing else on our porch was purchased this year; we used items that we already had:
Table - upcycled (Sam’s parent’s)
Candles - old candle containers (I forgot to unstack them when I took the photos - we keep them stacked because of the wind here)
Little white houses - Target clearance 2016 (we anchored them with pea gravel and have tealight candles inside)
Cinnamon broom - last year (Trader Joes)
Doormat - ChalkfullofLove (it has seen better days, and endured many storms)

Not pictured, our porch chairs, more plants, hanging plants, cozy blankets, pillows. One day maybe we’ll add more photos to this post. But even without the seating and textiles, this porch would still be one of our favorites spaces at home.
