A Simple Garden
A garden is never finished, it's always a work in progress. But, with a little bit of work each day during the growing seasons, you'll have a beautiful garden, whether than be a flower garden or a vegetable garden.
It is quite easy to fall behind on outdoor work, especially if there is also a large yard to maintain, and especially if you don't have a lawn service. Finding a way to maintain your yard and your garden is the first step...even if that means you have to put things on a schedule. If hiring a lawn service during the spring and summer is helpful, at maybe $20/week, then do so. This will give you more time to work in your garden.
The hardest maintenance in a garden is the growth of weeds. There are several weed burners or chemical weedkillers that can be applied, we use a natural vinegar recipe to help combat our weeds. We also have a fabric underneath our rock to keep weeds from popping up. (As www.bobvila.com notes, there are pros and cons to this kind of fabric, but it can be effective when used correctly.)
A damaged irrigation system can also prevent simple garden maintenance. We recently had an issue with our drip line, and will need to reinstall the entire system. I have found that hand-watering our plants is rather relaxing, and they seem to be responding better. Regardless, having an irrigation system that is effective is important, especially for lawn maintenance. Websites like https://www.proirrigation.com/fall-winterization/ can help.
The easiest way to reduce the amount of time you spend maintaining your garden is to maintain your garden more frequently. Spend 10 minutes working on your garden every day, and you'll spend less time fixing and more time enjoying your space, cutting flowers to bring inside, and picking veggies for dinner. You'll also be able to see problems before they grow too large.
Enjoy your gardens while you can! Fall is just around the corner!
